If you’re tackling insomnia, weight issues, chronic pain, are trying to quit a bad habit or are struggling with sex, hypnotherapy can help. And since hypnosis is mired with misinformation, here are a few myth-busting facts, along with some fascinating ways you can use hypnotherapy to your benefit.

Although movies portray hypnotists as slightly freaky, pendulum-toting individuals, the truth paints a different picture. A safe (non-freaky) hypnotist is one who is also qualified as a psychotherapist or psychiatrist. And as for the method of hypnosis, there are several, none of which involve pendulums! “The general method of hypnotherapy involves getting an individual to unwind using relaxation techniques. This gradually elevates them to a less inhibited state of consciousness, where they are more open to suggestions and directions,” explains Dr Mohit Shah, consultant psychiatrist, Unlimited Potentialities, Mumbai.

“Not everyone can be hypnotised,” he warns. “Emotional people are more open to suggestions and therefore are easily hypnotised. However, people who are very aware of their surroundings may not be,” Dr Shah explains.

Here are some situations where hypnosis can help:

Weight issues
“Hypnosis can help those who aren’t able to resist high-calorie, sugary foods, and are struggling to stick to a healthy diet. We create an aversion to these foods and motivate them to reduce their calorie intake,” says Dr Shah. Similarly, hypnotherapy can be used to help those suffering from bulimia, anorexia and other eating disorders as well.

Insomnia
Sleep disorders often occur with people who find it difficult to relax. “We teach them relaxation techniques which help them sleep better,” explains Dr Shah.

Pain
“Sensitivity to pain can be altered by hypnotherapy,” says Dr Shah. “When the individual is in a highly suggestible state of mind, we teach them to ignore the pain or learn to live with it.” This method can work on everything from muscular pain to that of pain caused by arthritis.

Bad habits
If you’re trying to quit smoking, caffeine or any other addiction, hypnotherapy can help. “It’s easy to suggest to an individual in a state of hypnosis that they avoid certain things,” says Dr Shah.  Hypnosis can also help create an aversion to these things, to make it easier to quit them.

Sex
“For individuals who want to have sex but feel that they can’t, possibly from fear of it, hypnosis can help,” says Dr Shah. This fear may involve an individual’s first sexual experience or a trauma (like rape or molestation) that created the phobia.

Although Dr Shah states that hypnosis cannot help you increase your sex drive, there are several reports that say otherwise, leaving this last a moot point.
